辨析

乍一看,原译借用了汉语现成的说法(有几本词典也提供了这样的译文),似乎很贴切。从语法分析,可以认为原句是一个省略的并列复合句,其意思相当于 Something/Someone is out of one's' mind when it is out of one' sight如果说 out of one's sight译做“眼不见勉强尚可,那么将 out of mind译做“心不烦却是错的,根据The Concise Oxford Dictionary, mind可以指 thought、 attention、 intellect, memory等,但并没有“烦”的意思。《英华大词典》对 out of mind的解释为“被忘却”与之相反的说法 come to/into(one's)mind的意思是“想起。(注意 be out of one's mind还有“发疯”的意思)所以原句的意思可解释为：A person or thing not seen is soon (or casily) forgotten,颇有点“人一走,茶就凉”的意思,据此可译成:看不见了也就淡忘了/不放在心上了.

事实上 out of可以构成许多习惯说法,其含义也不一样 out of的原意是“从…(内部)到外”或“在范围之外,如:

He looked out of a window.他从(一扇)窗子往外看,

The situation there was soon out of control.那个地方的情况很快失控。

He was soon out of my hearing.他很快就走到了我听不到的地方.

在转用中,多数情况下表示某种状态,如 out of work失业, out of date过时的, out of doubt毫无疑问, out of keeping/line不协调, out of breath上气不接下气,out of doors室外的/在室外, out of repair失修,也有时表示原因,如: out of curiosity出于好奇,
